So you want to put in a fish pond. How hard can it be? You just dig a hole fill it with water and throw in some fish, viola your done! That's what I thought before I actually started the process. I will cover a few things I wish I had known before I started. Location Location Location That's what they say about real estate and your fish pond is no different. It is very important to get the right location in your yard before you even begin digging. What makes a good location?

• Will there be easy access to the area even in winter months?
• Will you be adding additons in the future is there extra space at hand?
• Are there any slopes that may let rain water carry unwanted contaminants into your pond?
• Is there enough shade to keep the pond from over heating in summer months?
• Are there any predators in the area that may come and eat your pond inhabitants?

After answering these questions you will have a better Idea of the space you will want to use for You fish pond.

One thing I really wish I had known is that it is actually easier to maintain a larger pond than It is a small pond. This seems counter intuitive until your fish pond freezes solid in January damaging The liner and killing your fish. This exact thing happened to my fish pond in Michigan. Also keep in mind that it is better to go larger than you expect to use. The reason is you can easily fill the excess space with old carpet or packing material to protect your liner from getting damaged by rocks or other debris that will be left exposed.
